Newport Philharmonic Choir emerged from the choir formed for the National Eisteddfod which came to Newport in 1988. In a typical year we perform three main concerts:
- a light concert of short items in Spring;
- a major work with orchestra in Autumn;
- a Christmas concert
and various other performances for local charities or civic functions. Over the years we have acquired a wide repertoire of musical styles, sung in many languages (including Welsh, of course). Although we take our music very seriously we are primarily a social choir, singing for enjoyment and to extend our musical skills.
The city of Newport was twinned with Heidenheim in Germany, and we have developed a close friendship with Oratorienchor Heidenheim, exchanging visits every couple of years.
We are led by our musical director, Guy Harbottle and our assistant musical director, Martyn Jones.
